Walker Waived

Defenseman Matt Walker is a name that most Flyers fans are familiar with because he was the lone player acquired for Simon Gagne over the summer. Today Walker was waived by the Flyers in a move that frees up some salary for the team to potentially make a move at the trade deadline or resign Ville Leino.

No team is expected to claim Walker which would allow him to be sent down to the Adirondack Phantoms. Flyers beat writer Sam Carchidi speculates that the Flyers could use the new cap space to make a move for Carolina Hurricanes’ forward Erik Cole. Cole won a Stanley Cup in 2006 with Peter Laviolette in Carolina. He also would become a free agent this summer and his salary would fit right in with the Flyers’ salary cap. Cole has 13 goals and 15 assists this season for the Hurricanes. Even if it isn’t Cole, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Flyers make a move for a veteran forward even though they really don’t need to tweak much.

** UPDATE – Walker cleared waivers and was sent to the Phantoms.
