The Phillies could manage only one run on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves. They certainly had enough home runs to get the job done today. Jayson Werth, Placido Polanco, and Shane Victorino all went yard for the Phillies in their 5-3 win over the Braves. The Phillies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings. Jayson Werth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which forced in the game’s first run. Raul Ibanez followed that up with a sacrifice fly to score Chase Utley. Polanco delivered a home run in the 2nd and Werth had one in the 3rd.
Cole Hamels has cruising through the first four innings, but ran into some trouble in the 5th inning. He loaded up the bases with no outs. Melky Cabrera had an RBI single on a hit that deflected off Utley’s glove. Troy Glaus followed it up with a two-run RBI single that made the score 4-3. Hamels managed to battle out of the inning with the lead still entact. On the day, Hamels pitched five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out five batters and had four walks. It just seems like Hamels can’t put together two consecutive solid outings. He seems to struggle mostly in the middle innings.
The Phillies bullpen picked up Hamels and did a superb job in four innings of work. Chad Durbin pitched two innings and allowed no hits with four strikeouts. Jose Contreras pitched a perfect 8th inning. Then came in Brad Lidge for the save. This was Lidge’s first save opportunity of the 2010 season. Lidge was a little shaky, but mother nature helped him out a bit. Eric Hinske and Omar Infante both barely missed home runs because the wind knocked the ball down at the warning track. On any other day, those shots would’ve been home runs. But all that matters is that Lidge notched his first save of 2010. Lidge is still working to recover from his offseason elbow surgery. He will continue to improve and hopefully today was a wake up call. Let’s hope this is the first of many saves in the 2010 campaign.
The Phillies travel to Colorado to face the Rockies tomorrow at 8:40 PM.
