The injuries just keep piling up. Phillies reliever Ryan Madson was placed on the disabled list today with a broken toe. Apparently, the injury was suffered on Wednesday. There is no confirmation yet on how the injury occurred. Madson is 1-0 with a 7.00 ERA and four saves so far this season. Madson had struggled so far this season and never really settled into the closer role. This injury is announced on the same day that closer Brad Lidge was activated off the disabled list. Lidge is set to return against the New York Mets this weekend and hopefully see some action. Should Lidge have trouble, right-hander Jose Contreras is the backup closer.
The Phillies enter tonight’s game against the Mets in second place. I’ve been listening to Mets fans run their mouth all day. I would just like to remind them that it is only April. It has to be a violation to chirp about the standings this early in the season. Kyle Kendrick and Jonathan Niese will be pitching tonight. Kendrick has struggled this season, aside from the Braves start where he pittched eight shutout innings. Niese is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA so far this season. Here’s to hoping the brooms will make an appearance at the end of the weekend.
