Jayson Werth has been the talk of spirng training. Sure his beard is very impressive, but his physical talents were on display today. Werth broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a three-run home run. Werth’s home run allowed the Phillies to cruise to a 6-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Werth is batting .250 with two home runs and six RBIs in Grapefruit League play this spring. The hitters are certainly not expected to produce eye-popping numbers because after all, it is only spring training.
Joe Blanton got the start for the Phillies today. Blanton went five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. This was his second victory of the spring to improve his record to 2-0. What was even more impressive was the Phillies bullpen. The bullpen will once gain be the Achillies heel this season. Jose Contreras, Sergio Escalona, and Chad Durbin pitched a combined four innings of scoreless relief. Contreras pitched two of those innings. Contreras’ outing was a great sign because he is expected to fill the role vacated by Chan Ho Park. His first appearance against the Yankees wasn’t very impressive, so this outing was a substancial improvement.
