Carlos Ruiz is the latest and final Phillie to avoid arbitration. He agreed to a 3 year extension worth $8.85 million. Ruiz batted .255 with 9 home runs and 43 RBIs in 2009. Ruiz is one of the best defensive catchers in the game. He has a great arm that helps to throw out opposing base stealers. Keeping Ruiz in the fold for years to come is very important. Ruiz has been very clutch for the Phillies in their postseason runs in the last two years. He is batting .303 in his postseason career. He is one guy that can always be counted on in the playoffs.
This is probably the last signing Ruben Amaro will make before spring training. The only piece that the Phillies could use would be a left-handed reliever out of the bullpen. A player like Joe Beimel would be an ideal option. However, the Phillies are really backed up against the wall in terms of their budget. I could see them signing a guy like Beimel or another lefty in spring training. Maybe by that time, many of the player’s asking prices will come down.
