The Phillies have signed starter/reliever Jose Contreras. Contreras split time between the White Sox and Rockies last year, posting a 6-13 record with a 4.92 ERA. Ruben Amaro is making this move hoping that Contreras could even be the 5th starter in the rotation. If that fails, he could come out of the bullpen. He could be the bullpen replacement for Chan Ho Park.
Contreras has a career record of 71-63 with a 4.61 ERA. I personally would love to see him work out as a starter, but I think he will be more suited for a bullpen role. This is a low risk, high reward signing. Contreras probably isn’t going to produce eye-popping numbers. This signing definitely puts a nail in the coffin of Chan Ho Park coming back as a Phillie. The Phillies are now hoping that they have found a good replacement in Contreras.
